Kelpi is a sustainable materials company based in Bristol, UK, founded in 2020 by Neil Morris, Professor Chris Chuck and Murray Kenneth. The company is a certified B Corp and combines scientific research in biomaterials with commercial development to produce seaweed-based sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic packaging.

The company has pioneered a transformative biomaterial coating that can surpass the performance of conventional fossil fuel-based plastics.

Kelpi’s patented coating is derived from renewable seaweed and natural plant oils, offering a plastic-like barrier against water, oxygen, grease, and acidic contents, while being fully biodegradable and recyclable. The primary feedstock is responsibly sourced seaweed, which requires no land, freshwater, or fertilisers.

Kelpi has collaborated with leading brands in the food and drink, cosmetics, personal care and homecare spaces to develop and pilot sustainable alternatives, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner in driving circularity and reducing plastic waste.

Kelpi’s technology is particularly impactful for the personal care and cosmetics sectors, where 120 billion units of plastic packaging is produced each year.

Hugo Adams, CEO of Kelpi said “We’re excited to join L’Oréal’s L’AcceleratOR and build on a partnership that began nearly four years ago. Together, we can help L’Oréal deliver on its bold commitment to drive circularity by reducing virgin plastic use and creating packaging solutions that truly set a new standard for sustainability.”
