Blue Ocean Closures is a Swedish fiber-based packaging company founded in 2021. The startup produces closures from highly pressed natural fibers that are bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable as paper.
While there has been progress in recyclable packaging over recent years, the team at Blue Ocean Closures were motivated by the specific absence of sustainable alternatives for caps and lids, often made from plastic or metal.
Their solution uses a first of its kind technology that presses dry materials into high density 3D objects, turning plant-based fibres, taken from responsibly managed forests, into caps or lids.
These closures are made using renewable resources, recyclable as paper, and compatible with existing production lines, making them a practical and scalable alternative to plastic.
Blue Ocean Closures’ solution uses 10% of the energy used in traditional plastic moulding and cuts CO2 emissions by up to 80%. By partnering with major brands, Blue Ocean Closures is accelerating industry-wide adoption of low-impact solutions, contributing to reduced plastic use.
Lars Sandberg, CEO of Blue Ocean Closures said “Joining L’Oréal’s L’AcceleratOR marks an exciting milestone for Blue Ocean Closures as we bring fiber-based packaging solutions to market. Not only will the partnership with L’Oréal help to accelerate the adoption of sustainable closures within the cosmetic industry, but it will also demonstrate the potential of our closures to redefine packaging standards beyond the beauty industry.”
