Founded in Japan in 2015, Bioworks is a material creation company that develops bio-based and biodegradable materials to replace conventional fossil plastics in cosmetics packaging.

Bioworks’ aim is to bridge the gap between sustainability and performance, that exists in alternative packaging solutions. By planning and producing materials which are backed by technology and knowledge, the company is delivering materials that meet both environmental and functional demands.

Bioworks has developed powerful plant-based additives that strengthen the functional properties of bio-based materials.

These innovative additives have been used to create PlaX, a next generation bio-based packaging material made from sugarcane that’s stronger, more heat-resistant, and easier to mould than competitors in the space.

Bioworks’ PlaX emits 62% less carbon dioxide than traditional petroleum-based plastics. PlaX combines performance, sustainability, and supply chain compatibility, offering brands a clear path to cutting their environmental impact while delivering packaging that meets both functional and aesthetic standards.

Yukihiro Imai, Executive Chairman of Bioworks said “We’re thrilled to join L’AcceleratOR and drive the shift from fossil-based plastics to plant-derived alternatives and closed-loop systems within the beauty industry. Partnering with a global leader like L’Oréal enables us to demonstrate PlaX’s reliability by moving beyond development into real-world application, showcasing what’s possible for sustainable packaging.”
